Understanding the Layers of the Soul in Islam: The Nafs, Qalb & Ruh
Have you ever felt like there’s more to you than meets the eye?
That the person you see in the mirror is only one layer—and that somewhere deeper, beneath the noise and the roles and the tired smiles, there’s another you waiting to be found?
If you’ve ever felt that quiet ache, that pull to something higher, softer, and more real—then this post is for you.
Because Islam teaches us that we’re not just bodies.
Not just personalities.
Not even just “selves.”
We are a sacred unfolding—realms within realms—designed by Allah, journeying back to Him through every breath.
And at the heart of it all are three core realities that make up your inner world:
- Your Nafs (Self)
- Your Qalb (Spiritual Heart)
- Your Ruh (Soul-Essence)
Each one holds its own secrets. Each one speaks its own language. And each one is waiting to be seen, loved, and aligned.
Let’s walk through each layer—softly, slowly, with love.
Layer 1: The Nafs – Your Earthly Self
This is the part of you that feels pain, pride, desire, hunger, fear, and longing for safety.
It’s the “you” that reacts, compares, defends, craves.
In the Qur’an, the nafs is described in three main states:
- Nafs Ammārah – commanding to evil (Surah Yusuf 12:53)
The state of the ego unchecked. Always wanting more. Always justifying sin. - Nafs Lawwāmah – self-blaming (Surah Al-Qiyamah 75:2)
The stage of awakening. You fall, but you regret. You start to notice your patterns. You want to change. - Nafs Muṭma’innah – at peace (Surah Al-Fajr 89:27)
The highest stage. The self that has surrendered to Allah. Still human, but no longer ruled by emotion or ego.
Your nafs is not your enemy.
It’s your training ground.
It’s the part of you you’re meant to guide, not kill. To discipline, not shame.
It’s where healing begins.
Layer 2: The Qalb – Your Spiritual Heart
Deeper than the nafs is the qalb—the real throne of who you are.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“Indeed, in the body there is a piece of flesh. If it is sound, the whole body is sound. If it is corrupted, the whole body is corrupted. Truly, it is the heart.”
(Bukhari & Muslim)
The qalb is where you feel sincerity.
It’s where you know when you’ve betrayed your truth.
It’s the place Allah looks at—not your outer form, but your inner state.
“Allah does not look at your appearance or your wealth, but He looks at your hearts and your actions.”
(Sahih Muslim)
But the heart turns (qalb means “to turn”). It gets hurt. It gets covered.
Through sin. Distraction. Loss. Loneliness.
The heart can harden.
It can close.
But it can also be polished—with dhikr, tawbah, and truth.
When the qalb is clean, you begin to feel alive again.
You cry in sujood.
You feel the Qur’an speaking to you.
You sense Allah’s nearness without even trying to explain it.
This is the heart of your healing.
Layer 3: The Ruh – Your Divine Essence
And then, beneath it all… is the ruh.
You can’t see it. You can’t control it.
You can’t damage it or purify it—because it came from Allah, pure and untainted.
“They ask you concerning the Ruh. Say: It is from the command of my Lord.”
(Surah Al-Isra 17:85)
Your ruh is not emotional.
It doesn’t crave attention.
It doesn’t need healing.
It needs space to flow.
It’s the divine breath placed in you before birth.
It is the you that always remembers Allah, even when your mind forgets.
It is the you that whispers “return” even when your nafs says “stay.”
Your ruh is light. It’s not bound by place or language.
But it gets covered—by the noise of the nafs and the wounds of the qalb.
When your inner world begins to align—when the nafs is humbled, and the qalb is softened—the ruh begins to shine through.
And that’s when you begin to feel…
- Stillness.
- Soft awe.
- A longing that feels like home.
- A love that doesn’t need words.
- A surrender that feels like safety, not sacrifice.
So Who Are You, Really?
You are not just a person trying to heal.
You are a soul returning to light.
You are:
- A ruh from above,
- Living through a qalb that feels,
- Riding in a nafs that wants,
- Wrapped in a body that walks the earth.
And when all these parts begin to bow together…
That’s when you taste what the Qur’an calls:
“Hayātan ṭayyibah” — a pure, good life.
(Surah An-Nahl 16:97)
Not a life without pain—but a life with meaning.
What Can You Do Now?
You don’t have to fix everything overnight.
You don’t need to be perfect to be real.
You just begin.
- Speak to Allah with your qalb, not just your tongue.
- Train your nafs with compassion, not harshness.
- Let silence return you to your ruh.
And remember:
Your worth is not measured by your past.
It’s measured by the direction you’re turning now.
“Whoever turns to Allah, Allah turns to him—running.”
(Hadith Qudsi)
**You are not just one layer.
You are an entire inner universe.
And Allah sees every part of you.
And He never left. Not once.**
🌿 Whispered Du’a for the One Trying to Return
Ya Allah…
I am made of layers.
Some reactive. Some quiet. Some radiant. You know the parts of me that forget You.
You know the parts of me that long for You.
You know the parts of me I still can’t understand.Clean my qalb, gently.
Soften my nafs, patiently.
Let my ruh rise through it all—
not in pride, but in longing.Let me walk through this world
as a heart returning to You.
And if I fall again,
let me fall toward You.Ameen.
