✨ ROOT MEANING

Arabic root: ح – ي – ي (ḥāʼ • yāʼ • yāʼ)

WordMeaning
Ḥayy (حيّ)Living, alive, full of vitality
Al-Ḥayy (الحيّ)The One who is perfectly and eternally alive, whose life is not caused, limited, or interrupted, and from whom all other life flows

He never tires, never fades, never dies.

📖 QUR’ĀNIC VERSE

📌 Surah Āli ʿImrān 3:2

“Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living (Al-Ḥayy), the Sustainer of [all] existence.”

(This ayah also appears in Ayat al-Kursī, Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255.)

📚 Tafsir (Ibn Kathir, Al-Baghawi, Al-Sa‘di)**

  • Al-Ḥayy means:
    • His life is absolute
    • He has no beginning and no end
    • He was not born, and will never die
    • He does not sleep, decay, or decline
  • Human life = borrowed, temporary, and dependent
  • Divine life = eternal, independent, complete

He is not subject to the system of life — He is the One who wrote it.

🪞 Tafhīm (Relatable Understanding)

  • You say: “Everything around me dies, fades, or fails.”

Al-Ḥayy replies: “I remain. I was here before you cried your first breath, and I will be here when your breath returns to Me.”

📜 HADITH REFERENCE

📌 Sahih al-Bukhari 7384

Narrated by Ibn ʿAbbās (cousin of the Prophet ﷺ):

When the Prophet ﷺ was in distress, he would say:
“There is no god but Allah, the Most Great, the Most Forbearing.
There is no god but Allah, the Lord of the mighty Throne.
There is no god but Allah, the Lord of the heavens, the earth, and the noble Throne.”

➡️ Although Al-Ḥayy is not mentioned by name in this specific narration, other duʿās (see below) do use it directly.

📌 Sunan Ibn Mājah 3856

Narrated by Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him):

The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Shall I not teach you a duʿā that, if you say it, Allah will remove your worry?” Say:
‘O Ever-Living, O Self-Sustaining (Yā Ḥayy Yā Qayyūm), by Your mercy I seek help.’”

📚 Tafsir (Ibn Rajab, Al-Nawawi)**

  • The Prophet ﷺ turned to Al-Ḥayy in times of distress, because:
    • Allah’s life is uninterrupted
    • His ability to help never decreases
    • He is always present, always alert

When no one else is awake to hear you — Al-Ḥayy never sleeps.

🪞 Tafhīm (Relatable Understanding)

  • You feel: “I’m surrounded by loss. Nothing lasts.”

Al-Ḥayy answers: “I do. And if you hold onto Me, you’ll never be lost — even when you feel alone.”

🤲 PERSONALIZED DUʿĀ

(Inspired by Qur’an 3:2, 2:255 and Hadith Ibn Mājah 3856)
Not from the Prophet’s exact words — but drawn from authentic meanings

Yā Ḥayy,
Everything I love will die — but You never will.
Let me hold onto what is eternal.
Give my soul the life that doesn’t fade.
And when I am too tired to live with strength, remind me:
You are alive, and You are near.
